New programming concept
Text string
A string is text stored by a program. It can contain letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols. In MakeCode, the words inside the show string block are the string.
Say it simply: “A string is a piece of text the computer can use.”
Before you code
Choose a short message
Long messages take a long time to scroll across five lights. Start with a name, initials, or a word with fewer than ten characters.

Language and pacing note
The 5×5 display handles Latin letters and numbers most clearly. Learners can use initials, English transliterations, or a student-designed icon if their name does not display well.
