First programming concept
Code is a set of instructions
A micro:bit is a tiny computer. Like a phone or laptop, it follows instructions. Those instructions are called code. We will build the code with colorful blocks in Microsoft MakeCode.
Look closely
Meet the front of the board
- 125 LED lights
They show pictures, letters, and numbers.
- 2Buttons A and B
Your program can respond when you press them.
- 3Gold pins
They can connect the micro:bit to other things later.
- 4USB connection
The cable carries your program from the computer.
Follow the connection
From your idea to the lights
Remember: You write the program on the computer. The micro:bit runs that program.
Try it together
Open MakeCode and explore
- 1
Open the browser
Ask your teacher which browser to use. Click once in the address bar at the top.
- 2
- 3
Find three important areas
Point to the simulator, the block toolbox, and the workspace. Do not worry about every button yet.
SimulatorBlock toolboxWorkspace - 4
Practice moving one block
Open Basic. Drag a show icon block into the workspace. Watch the simulator.
- 5
Stop and share
Point to the part of the screen where you built the instructions. Tell a partner what changed.
For the teacher
A calm 55-minute plan
Welcome and connect
Phones and computers both follow instructions.
Pass around the board
Find LEDs, buttons, USB socket, and pins.
Computer basics
Practice click, drag, type, and press Enter.
MakeCode tour
Move one show icon block. Do not download yet.
Share and check
Ask learners to explain the connection in their own words.
Teaching notes for limited computers
Use teams of three: Driver, Guide, and Tester. In this session, rotate the Driver after the browser opens. A physical micro:bit can be passed around; every team does not need one yet.
